A GIFT GUIDE FOR GARDENERS
Have a gardener on your list but not sure what to buy them? I’ve curated my favourite gardening items that I use all the time, as well as a few things I have on my own wish list.
I’ve chosen to keep this post relatively short and focus on the things that I value the most, ensuring that you can’t go wrong no matter what you choose to buy.
No fluff here – just useful, functional things that any gardener would be happy to receive.
MY FAVOURTIE GIFT IDEAS FOR GARDENERS
FELCO PRUNERS
Felco pruners are well-known in the gardening world as high quality and reliable tools. This is a safe bet to gift to the gardener in your life, especially if they are relatively new to the gardening world and may not already have a pair.
SEEDS, CUTTINGS, OR PLANTS
It’s a no-brainer that gardeners love plants. That’s kind of the whole point. So, seeds, cuttings, and potted plants are all options when it comes to gifting. This is particularly true for unique or rare varieties that provide them a new experience when growing.
Many seed companies also offer theme packages that make for easy gifting – think a culinary herb garden, tea garden, or salsa garden seed kit.
GIFT CARDS
Some gardeners will prefer to pick out their own seeds and plants. If that’s the case or if you’re really unsure of what the gardener on your list needs or wants, a gift card to their favourite greenhouse, supply store, or seed company will be a welcomed gift.
If you’re not sure where they shop, just ask as though you’re looking for recommendations – chances are they’ll have no problem diving into details on their go-to spots.
SEED STORAGE
Most gardeners will inevitably end up with an extensive seed collection which can be tricky to keep organized. I recently switched to this photo box system for seed storage and I can’t express how awesome it works.
Step it up a notch and gift this label maker along with the storage box so they can craft their own perfect storage system.
GARDEN CART
Wheelbarrows are great for moving quantities of mulch and soil around the garden but they are lacking when it comes to all garden tasks.
A garden cart provides a nice flat bottom for transporting baskets, buckets, and large harvests. Gorilla carts are high quality and come in a variety of styles.
HARVEST BASKETS OR GARDEN HODS
Harvest baskets seem to be one of those items that gardeners can never have too many.
Sturdy, handwoven baskets are always appreciated, but my favourites are these garden hods. They hold a lot of produce and the mesh allows for washing right in the basket.
FARMER’S DEFENSE SLEEVES
These sun and scratch protective sleeves are a huge hit among gardeners. They are great for harvesting off prickly plants like zucchini and for protecting against nicks and scrapes from branches.
They are also moisture-wicking and cooling, are UPF 50, and come in a wide array of fun patterns and colours. I’ve heard great things from gardener friends and these are high on my own wish list.
BOOTSTRAP FARMER SEED STARTING TRAYS
Many of the seeds starting items on the market are single use or are so flimsy they won’t last through more than two seasons if you’re lucky.
Enter Bootstrap Farmer – these trays and cells are made of a thicker plastic that will last through many, many seeds starting seasons. I switched to these in 2023 and will never go back.
GARDENER’S BENCH/KNEELER
These adjustable benches are especially useful for gardeners with mobility limitations but really are great for absolutely anyone.
They can be used as a kneeler to save the knees or as a bench to sit on for higher tasks. I’ve been told by more than one gardener that this is the best gift they’ve received.
GARDEN TOTE
A garden tote is an excellent way to organize and transport all your gardening supplies and tools.
I personally use this tote from Lee Valley Tools but any sturdy tote with multiple pockets will do the trick.
WEATHER STATION
Tracking the weather is incredibly important for gardeners and I rely heavily on my digital weather station.
It not only allows access to real-time data on windspeed, temperature, and humidity levels, it also connects to an app to track what’s happening even when away from home.
GROW LIGHTS
Grow lights can be used for seed starting, growing veggies indoors and for giving houseplants a boost.
I prefer an option with adjustable legs which don’t require any kind of special racking or installation and can be setup anywhere.
AEROGARDEN
Hydroponic growing offers a way to bring the garden indoors for the off season and can be a fun change from in-ground gardening.
I have two Aerogarden Harvest models which I use to keep us in fresh herbs, greens, and even cherry tomatoes through the winter months.
MASSAGE
Despite what we may tell ourselves about staying in shape during the offseason, us gardeners are typically wracked with aches and pains after diving back into spring gardening tasks.
A gift certificate for a massage can be a welcome relief when reality hits.
